LA KACHARRERÍA is a social, cultural and educational project that we develop from the rural territory of Los Santos de Maimona (8,126 population), in Badajoz. Located in LaFábrika detodalavida, LA KACHARRERÍA is a warehouse with classified materials for reuse, a workshop equipped with tools for their transformation and a professional staff.
Our worklines are articulated around Sustainable Construction and Cooperative Creation, with the application of methodologies for the material reuse for the construction of equipment in different contexts.
We trust in Sustainable Construction as a tool for social and environmental awareness. For this reason, we promote dynamics that promote the self-construction and cooperative learning. Also we develope courses and workshops for the construction of scenery, prefabrication of wood, carpentry, blacksmithing, screen printing, etc.
In a few lines, LA KACHARRERÍA is:
Our desire (minimum objective) is to equip the LA KACHARRERÍA workshop with essential tools that allow us to generate social and economic activity through the effective development of scenographic, self-construction and artistic creation projects.
But also, we need these tools and other financial resources to continue the rehabilitation process of the old cement factory. Our dream (maximum objective) is to build a school based on a training and residency program that not only supports LA KACHARRERÍA, but also represents a new spatial and training resource for the rest of the projects that take place at LFDTV.
In short, LA KACHARRERÍA can be the germ of:
LA KACHARRERÍA is the germ of the rehabilitation of LaFábrika detodalavida, a community of social and cultural self-management located eleven years ago in a industrial space whose history dates back to the 1950s:
As part of the Plan Badajoz project, Franco’s dictatorship built the Asland Cement Factory in Los Santos de Maimona in 1956. For seventeen years, from 1956 to 1973, the cement company resolved the region's unemployment although also it prevented the growth of vineyards and other plantations contaminated by the particles that smoked the kilns. When the Plan Badajoz was satisfied, the factory and the quarries were transferred to the City Council. Years later, in 2013, this council and LaFábrika detodalavida association signed an agreement for the transfer of space use to "promote, manage and host social, leisure and cultural initiatives based on citizen participation in the rural area”.
Before signing the agreement, LFDTV had already promoted a crowdfunding process for the space rehabilitation through self-construction and materials reuse. Since then, two warehouses of the old cement factory have been rehabilitated and fertile soil has also been restored to a place that today must look more like what it was before Asland was built.
Currently, LFDTV contains four programs: Corralón Records, a music record label, conceived to promote young artists and musicians in the territory; Cine al Fresco, a summer film festival essentially oriented to independent cinema with already eight editions; SiempreViva, a traditional public garden resulting from rehabilitation and greening of the cement plant; and finally LA KACHARRERÍA project, with human resources, a public workshop and a warehouse with reused materials available to build structures and to continue the improvement of LFDTV.
In addition, LFDTV has hosted concerts, exhibitions, talks, book presentations, theater, poetry recitals, workshops and other initiatives of a cultural, educational, social and ecological nature since 2010.
We trust in Sustainable Construction as an effective tool for social and environmental awareness in the face of massive consumption of goods and services, so LA KACHARRERÍA is aimed at all sectors of the population that understand that the current consumer society is unsustainable. People, groups, associations or companies that prioritize the recycling, reuse and recovery of materials over the culture of "buy, throw away, buy".
At LA KACHARRERÍA we recover disused materials, we self-build, train and rehabilitate or create new scenographic, architectural and design infrastructures for projects of a social, cultural or creative nature.
In addition, LA KACHARRERIA is aimed at those who believe in decentralized experiences of self-employment and cooperative work within the system. Our goal is to generate work for ourselves and for a creative community that can develop their artistic projects in the environment of LaFábrika detodalavida. "Autopías" training and residency program has been conceived for artists of any nationality and discipline -architecture, theater, cultural management, music production, design, social research ...-, and it will include material and human resources and the necessary spaces to develop creative work at LFDTV: a workplace and a meeting point that will contribute to the Social Development of the territory.
LFDTV’s heritage socialization model is based on community action and a commitment to the permanence of youth to stop rural depopulation. Therefore, LA KACHARRERÍA also addresses those who understand that depopulation is a threat to rural Extremadura and are committed to Cooperative Creation from the territory.
LA KACHARRERÍA is a cooperative project developed by a team of creative professionals with experience in Architecture, Performing Arts, Resource Reuse, Design and Cultural Management.
This project comes from three previous experiences: FRÉ! (Fund for Scenic Resources), GRRR (Management for the Reuse and Redistribution of Resources) and LFDTV (LaFábrika detodalavida).
FRÉ! was born in Madrid in 2015 as a warehouse for reused scenic material at service of companies aware of the sustainable and economic construction of scenographies. It was the winner of the first edition of EmprendeEscena, an initiative of Factoría Cultural with the support of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports and the collaboration of the Teatro Español, Teatros del Canal, Teatro Real and Cultproject. FRÉ! was one of the pilot projects of Mares Madrid, an innovative urban transformation program through social and solidarity economy initiatives.
GRRR is a collaborative platform generated in 2015 from Red de Arquitecturas Colectivas that promotes the use of disused materials and the optimization of resources for their management. It is composed of technical elements to encourage entities to develop good practices in the efficient management of resources with protocols, reuse ideas, agreements and manuals, as well as a technological tool that allows the visualization of a supply and demand map, the management and monitoring of resources, as well as the calculation and visibility of their environmental impact.
LFDTV is a benchmark space known internationally for its citizen commitment to the rehabilitation of the industrial heritage of the Asland cement factory through the application of Self-Construction and Circular Economy strategies. Our experience is supported by a multitude of research, the most recent, the OpenHeritage international cooperation program, which identifies and investigates the use of participatory models in the management and reuse of abandoned heritage in Europe; LFDTV is the only Spanish case and the only one based in the rural environment.
In addition, LaFábrika detodalavida is inherently linked to citizen management initiatives such as La Invisible in Málaga, Can Batlló in Barcelona, Platohedro in Medellín (Colombia)... LFDTV is creating and participating in networks such as Cooperative City, Urban Maestro, Arrejuntándonos, Arquitecturas Collectives, or Fabricando el Sur; and it is collaborating with groups such as Recetas Urbanas, Straddle3, Arquitectura Expandida, Urbanbat, Makea tu Vida, or Todo por la Praxis. Also, it is working closely with the City Council of Los Santos de Maimona and other entities such as the Maimona Foundation, Ministry of Culture, Instituto de la Juventud Española, Junta de Extremadura, Diputación de Badajoz among others.
At LA KACHARRERÍA we promote responsible production and consumption, facing the culture of "buy, use, throw away" through the reuse of materials, self-construction and collective learning. LA KACHARRERÍA's activity in its materials warehouse and workshop fosters the second life of material resources from a multitude of reuse and reuse opportunities.
Through the rural school "Autopías", we want to contribute to the social and demographic development of the region, offering learning experiences in social, creative and cultural issues, and thereby promoting cooperative, decentralized, inclusive and quality education in the territory.
From LaFábrika detodalavida, we maintain our commitment to carry out the restoration and conservation actions of the old Asland cement factory with respect to heritage, involving society in the exciting task of preserving and at the same time transforming the historical, cultural and environmental legacy that this space treasures.
LFDTV is characterized by focusing on the sustainability of life as one of its lines of action, with this, the care necessary for the development of actions by the community is recognized and valued. In addition, it will be urged that the residencies carried out and the studies that are extracted from it contain a gender perspective as a transversal axis.
The work generated in this project will be of quality, thus fighting against the precariousness of the cultural sector in rural areas. In addition, due to its training aspect, it will promote the professionalization of new agents. LFDTV's cultural programming has a positive economic impact on Los Santos de Maimona through the visit of people attending its events and positioning in maps and cultural events at the national level, being a new tourist attraction.
LFDTV is located in an old cement factory, much of which is in a state of abandonment. The LFDTV community has rehabilitated through self-construction techniques the two warehouses that were given to it by the local entity. In this way, the project is committed to the conversion of a polluting extractive industry with little added value to a creative industry that is committed to talent in the artistic and cultural world.
LFDTV commemorates 10 years of work for the existing inequality between rural and urban areas in the field of culture, making this project a recognition of this fact, as well as a new benchmark in areas such as non-formal education and music production .
LFDTV is an association based in a community of people, accustomed to teamwork in a horizontal and collaborative way. In addition, its network of contacts and collaborations is wide, including from individuals, groups, associations to public and private entities.
