At Fundación Lurgaia Fundazioa, we have spent almost 10 years working in the UNDABASO area (near Ibarruri, Muxika, Bizkaia), within the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve, restoring an ecosystem that is under threat: our native forest.
Although forests were originally the dominant feature of our landscape, and the oak tree is one of our most emblematic species, very few mature and extensive forests remain today. Most of the territory is now occupied by fast-growing plantations, mainly pine and eucalyptus. The conservation status of our forests is poor. More than 90% of the area originally covered by oak forests has disappeared, completely transforming the landscape. The passing of the seasons is barely noticeable, and autumn — a time when temperate forests usually display a wide range of colours — goes almost unnoticed due to the permanently green monocultures of pine and eucalyptus.
When we speak about a “forest”, we mean a complex ecosystem that requires at least 100 years and 100 hectares before it can begin to be considered as such. Regarding the 100 years, we are not in a hurry. We support nature, and our work is not based on immediate results. What we do know is that caring for our forests today will shape our future. Restoring oak forests is an important step not only towards recovering a natural treasure of the Basque Country, but also towards improving other vital ecological aspects, such as helping combat climate change, reducing erosion processes, and improving the quality of rivers and streams.
This year, after many conversations, we have secured access to two new plots of land currently occupied by Monterey pine plantations. Through this agreement, we will add 31 hectares to the 26 hectares already under our stewardship. This will represent a major step towards creating the largest oak forest in the entire Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve: 57 hectares that will be transformed from commercial forestry plantations into future native forests. (57 hectares are equivalent to 76 football pitches the size of San Mamés Stadium.)
Our motivation does not end there. We also want this project to have a strong educational and social dimension. That is why we are asking for your support to help us achieve this goal, so that together we can help the forest recover and create the largest oak forest in the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve. Securing funding is only the first step. Afterwards, we would love as many people as possible to join our environmental volunteering days, where we will begin planting the first trees and shrubs of this future forest. In this way, we hope the project will involve a large number of people who can each contribute their small part to improving the natural environment and help create something that will undoubtedly bring intangible benefits to society as a whole: more life, cleaner water, less erosion, less CO2…
At UNDABASO, we have the ambitious goal of protecting 100 hectares of land. In other words, we want to replace pine and eucalyptus plantations with forests for society as a whole. Our aim is the conservation and restoration of the natural environment. Once we gain access to land, it is permanently freed from any form of exploitation and begins its transformation into future native forest.
This year, we have had the opportunity to access 31 hectares of land currently occupied by Monterey pine plantations. These plots would be added to the other 26 hectares where we have already replaced pine plantations with native forest, representing a major step towards creating the largest oak forest in the entire Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve: 57 hectares of forest replacing industrial forestry plantations and becoming future native woodland.
By the end of 2017, we will officially acquire the two plots. What we are purchasing is the land itself, not the standing timber (the trees and associated wood resources will remain with the current owners). The total cost will be €108,000, payable in instalments over three years.
The agreed payment schedule is as follows: at the signing in November 2017, we will pay 75% (€80,000); at the end of 2018, we will pay 12.5% (€14,000); and during the third year we will complete the final 12.5% payment (€14,000).
To cover the first payment, Fundación Lurgaia Fundazioa already has €62,000 available, saved thanks to contributions from our 276 members and the work we carry out every year. Through this campaign, we hope to secure your support to raise the remaining €18,000 needed for the first payment. Optimistically, we have also set an optimal target of an additional €14,000, which would allow us to cover the second year’s payment as well.
This winter, 10 hectares of pine plantation will be harvested, allowing us to begin planting trees and shrubs immediately. The remaining 21 hectares will be progressively harvested over the coming years according to their forestry cycle.
The essential goal of this project is to help restore our forests and thereby improve our future. It is important to remember that the emblematic forest ecosystem of this region is the oak forest, primarily composed of oak trees, and that its conservation status is poor because areas where oak forests should exist are now occupied by pine and eucalyptus plantations. Oak forests have almost entirely disappeared from Bizkaia, along with the wildlife and plant species associated with them.
Restoring our forests will contribute to a better future for society as a whole, especially for people living in the surrounding area, since commercial forestry plantations have drastically reduced biodiversity. This project will also benefit the wider population because these forests will help absorb CO2 and therefore contribute to climate change mitigation.
The specific objective of this campaign is to secure the funding necessary to access 31 new hectares of land in the Undabaso area and continue replacing pine forestry plantations with native forest, contributing to the restoration of our natural environment for the benefit of present and future generations.
We have already spent almost 10 years working in this corner of the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve restoring native forest ecosystems, and we currently have 26 hectares under restoration. With the help of this campaign, we will be able to work on more than double that area.
This project is part of our QUERCUS Programme, whose aims are both ecological and social.
Fundación Lurgaia Fundazioa has spent more than 15 years dedicated to restoring native forests, conserving nature, and promoting environmental awareness. Today, we manage 155 plots of land through stewardship agreements (land-use agreements and/or purchases), covering more than 250 hectares.
Since the beginning of the QUERCUS Programme in 2003, more than 100,000 trees and shrubs from 30 different native species have been planted, most of them with the help of hundreds of volunteers who have participated in numerous Environmental Volunteering Days.
The most important projects within the QUERCUS Programme are located around the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve, where two areas stand out due to their ecological importance: Amunategi, with 30 hectares of forest under restoration, and Undabaso, with 26 hectares currently under restoration and moving towards 57 hectares.
Access to land is achieved either through agreements with landowners or through direct purchase. In the latter case, the role of the people who are members of our foundation becomes especially important, as it is mainly through membership fees that we are able to finance land acquisition.
Our board of trustees is made up of four expert naturalists with experience across different fields of biology. The foundation also benefits from the support of a valuable team of collaborators and scientific advisers specialising in fauna, flora, and ecological processes.
In addition, our foundation is part of the Association of Foundations for Nature Conservation (AFN), currently composed of the 18 most important environmental conservation foundations in Spain. Since 2011, Fundación Lurgaia Fundazioa has also been a member of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), as well as its Spanish Committee.
We currently have the support of 276 members. Every year, thousands of people also join us during our environmental volunteering activities, helping plant trees and carry out other tasks that support forest restoration.
As for infrastructure and resources, we have an office where we carry out our daily work and organise talks and discussions related to natural heritage. We also have a native plant nursery and the tools necessary to carry out planting work.
Our commitment is both ecological and social. We want to restore native forest within the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve, and to achieve this we want society to participate both through patronage and through volunteering days dedicated to planting trees and shrubs.
