In community acupuncture we use recliners for people to rest during the session, and 5 is the number of people who may share room, we have two auxiliary loungers and also need a simple massage stretcher.

El Roble is a project of community acupuncture. Our two main motives are on the one hand to allow this technique to be available to all people and on the other hand for the acupuncturists to find an economically viable working model that allows them to develop their practice and help their communities.
We are going to work with a sliding scale pricing between 12 and 25 euros per session. People decide within that range what they want to pay according to their needs. Sessions are going to be in a common room, needless to undress just sit and relax.
What is acupuncture ?
The word acupuncture comes from the Latin "acus " (spot) and "puncture” (puntcture) and could be defined as a native Chinese practice in which very fine needles are inserted into the skin at specific points on the body with the aim to relieve the pain or to treat symptoms and diseases.
More specifically we could say that acupuncture is one of the oldest , most widespread, and safest of all those designed to maintain the precarious balance we call health. Acupuncture is simple, safe, effective and also unexpensive.
Acupuncturists use a very fine sterile disposable needles, inserted into specific spots on the skin surface, with the intention of helping the body’s regulation functions.
What is Community Acupuncture?
The focus of our technique is communal because sessions are held in a common room , no need to undress , community acupuncturists use acupuncture points that always runs from the elbow to the hand and from the knee to the toe, from these points we treat pain and unevenness in all body areas.
The practice of acupuncture in the Western world is usually performed in an individually way , and this aspect makes it financially inaccessible to many people who need it without increasing their effectiveness. This way of working is a collective habit to always take for granted , but not mean it is the only way to do it. The experience in the practice of community acupuncture allow us to say that the benefits increase and the fact of rest with the needles next to another person empower our self-regulatory capacities as if we actually help each other . Community Acupuncture also allows us to share these sessions with our partners, family , friends ... no need to be isolated in a room.
If we are all together in one room... Must I share with all the reason for my visit?
It is not necessary at all. It will be / the acupuncturist / who greet you , do you explain the reason for your visit and then in the room there is enough room to talk to him / her individually if we have any problem, feel that our privacy is invaded. Community Acupuncture is not a therapy group simply rested together with needles in our own space , if we can read , listen to our favorite music, etc.
How much it cost?
In community acupuncture price is chosen by the person according to his possibilities on a sliding scale , from 12 euros to 25 euros. Each person chooses within that range how much he wants to pay according to their economical and personal situation , no questions asked .
The sliding scale is placed under the income distribution in order to find the strip where most people can afford their access to this technique. Apart from this price range there are bonuses and special offers for unemployed, workers in conflict , students, pensioners , etc ...
For some time we have been sharing this technique in different areas such as markets or communities working receiving a voluntary contribution and most of these contributions are within this range .
Is an acupuncturists a doctor?
Laws on natural and alternative therapies, as known to that space where acupuncture is normally fits , is underdeveloped in relation to neighboring countries and in the EU in general.
A formal acupuncture qualification doesn´t exist in Spain , but we have private schools where this technique can be studied and where it is not necessary to be a doctor , although there are naturopathic doctors who use this technique in their treatment strategy.
At “El Roble” we are not doctors, we have this qualification issued by a private school that certifies our studies per 1000 hours and we belong to the professional association APSANA .
Everybody who has studied acupuncture at some point feel that we did a great personal and financial effort to study a technique we know works , but cannot be used because a lot of people around us can´t afford it . With the passage of time many people leave it and end up working in other things and acupuncture becomes another title that is stored in the CV
Such as big contradiction is the motor of this story and the starting point for two main reasons:
1- Allow access to this technique to a larger number of people, preventing it from becoming a luxury accessible only to a minority.
2 Find a business model that allows acupuncturists to find a viable and fair way to practice their profession, making acupuncture something known and respected for its usefulness and effectiveness.
This project would not have been possible without the inspiration and support of POCA people ( People's Organization of Community Acupuncture ) and specially Lisa Rohleder whose book " Acupuncture is like noodles (the little red book of working class acupunture ) " is a constant inspiration for me .
From this point of view the project El Roble is a message in a bottle for all acupuncturists , as this is now just an idea which could become a movement. If one of us can do it, many more may do so.
1.- To obtain the necessary funding to start the project chairs, corporate image , painting, equipment needed , etc.
2.- To present our proposal to the greatest number of people around us and to all acupuncturists who may be interested in this way of working
This is an individual project right now, a form of self-employment , that is now called entrepreneurship but it would be impossible without the help of many people. Our commitment is to build community around what we do. Against this entrepreneur’s discourse we prefer to say craft and commitment with what we know to serve our community.
My interest in acupuncture arose eleven years ago when I started studying a system of Qi Gong called Taijiwuxigong with Andy Henry in Oviedo. I was also very lucky cause I studied with Dr. Shen Hongxun and I´ve been teaching this system for more than a year. The need to understand our body and energy system then carried me to study acupuncture, massage and osteopathy. Professionally, I worked for the Institute of Medical and Biological Laboratory Erlingen phytotherapy as well as conducting individual and community acupuncture treatments. I am a member of POCA (People´s organization of community acupuncture).
