Allgemeine Informationen
La Benéfica - Espaciu Cultural right now is a big dream. The dream of having in L'Infiestu, Piloña, a space that combines four priorities: cultural artistic expression, community action, the fight against the abandonment and depopulation of rural areas and the transmission of knowledge.
We want a space that gives visibility to contemporary and avant-garde artistic expression, but also to popular and traditional culture, and that also facilitates the transmission of knowledge between different generations. A space totally rooted in the community.
Hauptmerkmale
La Benéfica's building has had many lives. Our goal is to rehabilitate and recover it so that it returns to being, in part, what it already was in the past. Built in 1926, the hall was the headquarters of La Benéfica de Piloña, Sociedad de Socorro Mutuo. The aim of the company, like many others of its time, was that the partners (neighbors of the town), helped each other in their problems: illnesses, widowhood, liquidity... With the contributions of the associates they met needs that the state, or other institutions, did not cover. The Sociedad de La Benéfica became so successful that they built a rectangular warehouse of about 400m2 which functioned as a theater, a dance hall, a social meeting place and a cinema every Sunday.
This small artistic and supportive utopia ended in 1946, and the warehouse became a candy factory, then a parking lot and then it was abandoned. From the moment we started with the idea until we bought the Building, the support and enthusiasm of the residents of Piloña has been the most important thing.
The next step, and why we organize this crowdfunding campaign, is to rebuild the basic parts of the building in order to obtain an opening license and start programming activities as soon as possible. To do this, you have to carry out demolitions and earthworks, rebuild the roof, carry out a safety plan, plumbing, electricity, etc.

Warum das wichtig ist
Our vision of La Benéfica is that it be an open space and that it belongs, at the same time, to many people. Therefore, this campaign is aimed at any person, company or entity that wants to be part of a project that values culture, community, art and rural areas. Whether you live in Asturias, or if you love coming here, as if you never plan to come. La Benéfica is much more than a physical space, it is an idea of how to live and promote culture and art in an unconventional environment, far from the cultural capitals and the general public.
We already have the support of the Piloña City Council, which has always supported the idea, local companies such as Ordum Cervezas Artesanas, Sidra Viuda de Angelón or Asturcilla, and also national companies such as Filmin and Primavera Sound. But what we value most (and need) are ordinary people to join this project. We have designed rewards for all tastes and we hope you enjoy them. If you have any other collaboration ideas, get in touch with us!

Team und Erfahrung
La Benéfica de Piloña is a non-profit association founded in March 2021 by Sergi Martí, Nacho Somovilla and Rodrigo Cuevas and registered with number 622424 in the National Registry of Associations. Although its main project is the rehabilitation of the warehouse and the start-up of the cultural space, the association also organizes artistic and cultural activities in compliance with its statutes.
The promoters and creators of this project are:
Ignacio Somovilla
Graduated in Art History from the University of Barcelona and in Law from the University of Barcelona. Oviedo obtained the Master in Cultural Management at the University of the West of England (Bristol). He has developed his professional career in the field of cultural management in different artistic projects. He is currently carrying out his project to disseminate the art of the garden in various radio and journalistic media, as well as the author of a couple of books and with the launch of an editorial project. He divides his life between Barcelona, Asturies and some wonderful gardens.
Sergi Martí
Social worker, his current occupation is focused on citizen participation, so he is in constant relationship with many entities and organizations. He has also militated and collaborated with community associations in the field of health. Although I live most of the time in Barcelona, for years I have felt linked to Asturias, where I am involved in different cultural actions.
Rodrigo Cuevas
Pianist by training (conservatory of Oviedo and ESMUC of Barcelona) and folkloric by vocation. Artist and cultural agitator, born in Oviedo but emigrated to rural areas first in Galicia and then in Piloña, where he now settled. A lover of the traditional world and life in the country, he dedicates himself to invigorating the rural area of Piloña through culture while touring the theaters with their folkloric shows.
The three of them, along with two good friends, Cecilia and María Gonzalez, direct the musical festival "Una Señora Fiesta" in Vegarrionda.
Cuevas questions the concept of "Spain emptied" in an interview because "it is more recognizable from the urban than from the rural". He points out that «people do not feel very identified with that label because it comes from the cities again, like 'now we are going to repopulate you'»
The three, along with two good friends, Cecilia and María Gonzalez, direct the musical festival "Una Señora Fiesta" in Vegarrionda.
For the creation of this project, the Asociación La Benéfica de Piloña is collaborating with architects, designers, artists, and many other people who are putting their grain of sand to help it succeed.

Gesellschaftliches Engagement

Creating culture
The recovery of the historic building of La Benéfica de Piloña involves not only a restoration of a historical-artistic material asset, but also the reconstruction of a part of the history of l'Infiestu and Piloña. A small story of social organization and brotherhood between neighbors vectorized by culture and art.
In the building, founded in 1926 as a theater and party hall, there were also professional trainings, courses and cinema on Sundays. It was, together with the Casino de l'Infiestu, the place through which modernity came to the town. The cultural and technical modernity. The first proper theater and the first place where movies were shown on a regular basis.
This small cultural utopia was developed in a socio-cultural context very different from the current scene in Piloñés. Piloña in 1926 had 18,000 inhabitants at a time when Xixón had 60,000. Most of the towns in the council did not even have a road, so the town of L'Infiestu functioned as a true cultural and social capital.
With the Charity we want to recover that community spirit of the old Charity Society and return to the council a space in which to promote all the cultural activity that already exists in the territory, and in turn connect it with other places at a national and international level.
